Unveiling Africa through the Transformers Program is focused on immersing and engaging secondary school students with African-centered history in a simplified, personalized, and relatable way. To implement the program across Secondary Schools in Nigeria and beyond, we hope to work with secondary school teachers, lovers of history, and other stakeholders.

The Torchbearers of History Program is an African centered Political and History Teacher Education program that equips teachers (especially History and Social Studies) with the knowledge, skills and experiences that they require to teach African History in a student centered, fun and relatable way. This program seeks to address four critical issues in the Nigerian education system:

  • The outward facing, colonial and eurocentric orientation of the Nigerian curriculum and teaching approaches
  • The absence of experiential African-centered history education in the Nigerian education system.
  • The shortage of history education teachers in Nigeria by recruiting and training prospective teachers who can teach history
  • Morbid approaches to history education in Nigeria by making History a fun, relatable and relevant subject.
  • Critical Consciousness & Reflexivity in Teaching
  • Principles & Approaches to African-centered Teaching
  • Five Eras in African history (Precolonial, Slavetrade, Colonial era, The Quest for Independence, Post-Colonial Polities/Politics and Contemporary Politics & Issues)
  • Participatory action-research methodologies
  • Project based Education
  • Keen interest in African history, culture, and politics
  • Desire to learn and engage in knowledge-sharing
  • Teaching experience and/or qualification preferably with teenagers
  • Willingness to support the learning experience of young people
  1. Opportunity to deepen personal understanding and consciousness of Nigerian/Africa history and culture
  2. Strengthened analytical and critical thinking skills needed to lead critical discussions
  3. Satisfaction from contributing to advancing proper education needed for social change
  4. Continuous personal and professional development sessions (monthly, termly, and network)
